Kurrajong Heights Neighbourhood Groups

In mid 2024 your Brigade started to encourage the formation of Neighbourhood Groups of typically 10 – 15 families for the purpose of helping each other and more effectively working with the Brigade to make our environment safer.

The reality is we live in a fire prone area and we know that we will have to confront a major fire every few years as we did in 2013 and 2019. Climate change has the potential to reduce the time between major fires.

In 2019 a number of us formed small groups to support and help each other, stay in touch, and share information. It worked really well for those of us who decided to evacuate and those that chose to stay.

So we have decided to work together with our Community to create permanent groups. We expect to see the following benefits:

  • Better protection of lives as we will know who has stayed to defend their properties
  • More resilient environment as all our properties will be better prepared and also better able to withstand house-to-house fire spread
  • Much better informed community better able to make optimum decisions for their family and neighbours
  • Better emotional outcomes. The 2019 fires had a major impact on many in our community; by bringing us together in small groups we can all support each other emotionally

Experience in other localities also indicstes that where communities are organised in neighbourhood groups the people are more likely to survive a major fire and where people stay and defend their properties they are more likely to also survive.
