Some plants can act as fire suppressants and can really help to slow a fire, while other plants can readily catch alight and act as a wick to take the fire straight to your home.
Plant the correct plants and they will catch stray embers and prevent them from setting things alight.
So which plants are OK and which are not?
We previously published a list from the RFS in Tasmania as it was the only one we could find. However plants that grow in Tassie may not be the same as the ones that grow at the Heights so we decided to start to develop our own database and include the following information:
* The common & botanical names
* Whether its exotic or native
* The growth form … i.e. tree, vine, shrub etc
* Flammability rating
* Whether fire is required for it to reproduce and the interval needed
* Fire Resistance/Response Type
*Notes & link to photos
The database in its current form is shown below and the information is currently being reviewed by a number of knowledgable people in the community.
