Blocking the Downpipes
The traditional method of blocking downpipes is to fill a sock with sand and stuff it down the hole. However you’ve probably got a lot of downpipes and if you’re getting older it may not be too wise to be up a ladder.
A faster and more efficient solution is to install a shut off valve in the downpipe. There are a couple of examples. The first is called a Bushfire Buddy, which is only available online in NSW, and the second is called a Sliding Gate Valve which is available from a number of different retail outlets..
